Hello, Y'all!
This first half of October has been an amazing, hectic time and to top it off we even got a cat! (More on that in another upcoming post.) Somehow we have made it to the middle of October and Halloween is less than two weeks away! I have been very busy completing items on my Fall Bucket List. I have tried some new Fall recipes, which you should be looking out for next week. I have watched all my favorite Halloween movies while eating too much candy corn. Oh, it has been so much fun!
One item on my list that I have yet to figure out is dressing up for Halloween. Ever since graduating I have not dressed up for any Halloween festivities, because there haven't been any festivities to go to haha. This year I do have a reason to dress up! We are changing things up in the office and I need to find the perfect costume. I am torn between two ideas/themes, either a Harry Potter character or a character from the Doctor Who series. After spending some time at Universal last month I have been loving everything Harry Potter a little extra. But at the same time though, I have discovered the epic-ness of the BBC series, Doctor Who. Both would be a lot of fun and easy to wear which makes it so hard to decide.
When the announcement was sent about the costume day at work, they made it clear that the costume has to be work-appropriate. To me, this is obvious that the costumes have to be appropriate. As redundant as the comment seemed to me, the statement reminded me that for many individuals this isn't obvious. Society finds it totally acceptable and even expects for women to be minimally dressed in sexy themed costumes. Movies like Mean Girls highlighted the popular girls dressed as Play Boy Bunnies and played into the mass media stereotype of what women should wear for Halloween.
Modesty should not be left at the door just because it is Halloween.
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2
Values should be lived 365 days of the year, not put aside due to what society thinks or what is convenient. One should carry themselves this Halloween as they would any other Tuesday, trying to be the best representation of themselves. To be the cutest girl at the party you do not have to be wearing basically just underwear. A sweater decorated as a cactus and accessorized with a smile beats any scandalous outfit. Being modest during Halloween is not just about what outfit you wear but also about being fiscally responsible. You can spend hundreds of dollars on having the "perfect costume" but at the end of the day what does that get you? A couple of compliments on your authenticity and detailed look? It is not worth it. We are better off being a little creative, using what we have and saving that money to go on another adventure or giving back to our community.
I love a fun "do it yourself" costume. There are so many witty ones out there. Halloween is a great time to share your creative side...instead of your backside. Whether you want to find out to make your own Harry Potter tie or want to see how to do your makeup like a giraffe, Pinterest is a great place to start to brainstorm potential costume ideas. I have even found last-minute costume ideas which use items from around the house or simple closet staples. Below I have my DIY Halloween board to get your creative juices flowing.
